June 11, 2020 - The brutal assault of Mercy Cherono, a 21-year-old woman, has sparked outrage in Nakuru County, with local leaders demanding justice and action against the perpetrators.
According to reports, three police officers, including the deputy officer commanding Olenguruone Police Station, have been arrested in connection with the incident. The arrests follow investigations conducted by the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Cherono was dragged on the streets of Nakuru's Olenguruone town while tied to a motorbike, leaving her with severe injuries. She has since been transferred to the Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital for treatment and is expected to record a statement with police.
Leaders in the county have condemned the incident, with Governor Lee Kinyanjui, Senator Susan Kihika, and County Woman Representative Liz Chelule calling for stern action against the perpetrators.
“We wish Cherono a quick recovery and demand that the police officer responsible for this brutality be held accountable,” Governor Kinyanjui said.
Ms. Kihika described the attack as a “beastly act” that should be condemned, while Ms. Chelule called for stern action against the police officer involved.
