On June 11, 2020, the European Union pledged an additional Ksh 600 million to Kenya's social safety net programme, aimed at supporting households in Nairobi's informal settlements.

The funds, which will aid an estimated 80,000 households, are expected to increase money circulation in the economy by boosting the purchasing power of vulnerable groups.

Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Simon Chelugui noted that the funds will significantly increase the purchasing power of vulnerable groups in the country and inject more liquidity into the economy.

As part of efforts to mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the government had previously disbursed Ksh 7.8 billion under the cash transfer programme.

Chelugui emphasized the need for an allocation of more than Ksh 5 billion during the current year's budget to ensure efficiency and expand the programme to cover more than the current 21 counties.

The government is also seeking to amend the social security act to streamline operations in the cash transfer programme and make it more efficient.
