PRESIDENT KENYATTA'S DILEMMA ON WAIGURU OUSTER ¶
Published on June 11, 2020
President Uhuru Kenyatta's office is caught in a dilemma over the impeachment of Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru, with the County Assembly voting to remove her from office. The Office of the President must decide whether to support the assembly's decision or uphold the rule of law.
Waiguru, a passionate proponent of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), has been accused of corruption and abuse of power. The County Assembly has voted to remove her from office, citing her alleged misdeeds. However, Waiguru's supporters argue that she was democratically elected and should not be removed without due process.
The national government is also involved in the tussle, with Interior CS Dr. Karanja Kibicho visiting Kirinyaga to inspect national government projects. It is alleged that agreements were made with the MCAs, but it is unclear whether these agreements reached the governor's desk.
President Kenyatta, as the leader of the Jubilee Party, has a significant stake in the outcome. He has been vocal about corruption and has said that he will not accept phone calls from individuals alleged to have been involved in graft. The question remains: who will falter in this high-stakes game of politics?
