On June 10, 2020, Mexico's government announced a grim milestone: the country's death toll from the new coronavirus had surpassed 15,000. This came as the country recorded its highest number of infections in one day.

According to health official Jose Luis Alomia, a further 708 fatalities were recorded in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 15,357. In addition, 4,833 new infections were reported, bringing the total to 129,184.

Health Undersecretary Hugo Lopez-Gatell, heading the pandemic response, warned that case predictions for the country had been expanded. He explained that the pattern of infections and deaths had stalled, but not increased, over the past 17-18 days.

As of June 3, Mexico had seen its highest number of daily Covid-19 deaths, with 1,092 reported. However, authorities explained that the figure included updates to months-old cases.

The Americas have become the epicentre of the pandemic, which has seen more than 7.3 million cases and 414,484 deaths worldwide after it began last year in China.
