Developed after an eight-year study on 18,000 women, the fertility diet is a set of 10 evidence-backed suggestions to improve fertility. The study found that the diet can reverse and prevent ovulatory infertility, a common cause of infertility.
However, it's essential to note that the fertility diet won't work if infertility is due to physical impediments like blocked fallopian tubes. It's always best to consult a doctor to determine the cause of infertility.
10 Principles of the Fertility Diet ¶
- Cut out trans fats, which are commonly found in pizzas, pastries, and fast food. A Harvard study established that women with ovulation-related infertility had high levels of trans fats in their diet.
- Use more unsaturated vegetable oils to reduce body inflammation and increase insulin sensitivity, which boosts immunity.
- Replace skim and low-fat dairy with whole milk and full-fat dairy.
- Increase vegetable protein and reduce meat consumption.
- Eat complex carbohydrates, such as fruits, beans, vegetables, and whole grain products.
- Get extra folic acid by consuming more cereals, spinach, beans, and citrus foods.
- Load up on plant iron, which promotes fertility, by eating foods like whole-grain cereals, spinach, beans, pumpkin, tomatoes, and beets.
- Drink plenty of water and limit coffee, tea, and alcohol consumption. Avoid sodas altogether.
- Maintain a healthy body mass index (BMI) between 20 and 24. Being underweight or overweight can reduce fertility.
- Engage in moderate exercise, as excessive exercise can disrupt ovulation, while inadequate exercise can affect weight.
