June 11, 2020 - In a move that reflects the changing attitudes towards racism and white supremacy, NASCAR has announced that it will ban the Confederate battle flag from its events and properties.
The decision comes just two days after Darrell Wallace Jr., the first black driver in 50 years to win one of NASCAR's top three national touring series, called on the organization to ban the flags outright.
“No one should feel uncomfortable when they come to a NASCAR race,” Mr. Wallace, who is known as Bubba, told Don Lemon of CNN. “So it starts with Confederate flags. Get them out of here. They have no place for them.”
NASCAR's decision is a significant step towards creating a more inclusive environment for all fans, competitors, and industry members. The organization stated that the display of the Confederate flag will be prohibited from all NASCAR events and properties.
