Kenya's agricultural sector is a significant contributor to the country's economy, accounting for 31.5% of the GDP and employing 38% of the population. Small-holder farmers, who make up 70% of the farming population, are responsible for 75% of national food production.

However, these farmers face numerous challenges, including inadequate access to farming inputs, knowledge on sustainable farming technologies, finance, and commercial markets. The recent locust invasion and COVID-19 pandemic have further exacerbated the food insecurity situation in the country.

Disruptions in the movement of goods have made it difficult for farmers to acquire the necessary support for continued production. The closure of local farmers' markets has also added to the challenge, as these markets serve a significant share of fresh and perishable food items.

Opening up the closed markets with controlled capacity could help reduce the impacts of the pandemic, floods, and locusts on the Kenyan food system. This would enable farmers to continue accessing markets for their produce and reduce losses, especially for perishable foodstuffs.

Farmer cooperatives can also play a crucial role in solving the challenge of under-investment in the agricultural sector. These cooperatives can help farmers share resources, including knowledge, seek government support, and access financial facilities to scale their activities.

Ultimately, securing Kenya's food security will require a collective effort from the government, citizens, and farmers themselves. This includes long-term investment in infrastructural development, improved access to extension services, supporting market access, and enacting policies that prioritize the welfare of Kenyan small-holder farmers.
