Burundi's President Nkurunziza Dies After Heart Attack

Published on June 10, 2020, Burundi's President Pierre Nkurunziza has died after suffering a heart attack.

President Nkurunziza, who had been in power since 2005, had attended a volleyball match on Saturday afternoon before falling ill and being taken to hospital that evening.

His wife, Denise Bucumi Nkurunziza, is still receiving treatment at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, for an underlying condition.

President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya sent a message of condolence to the people of Burundi following the demise of President Nkurunziza, describing him as an outstanding regional counterpart who served his country with distinction.

President Kenyatta also prayed for God's calming comfort as the family, people of Burundi, and East Africans mourn their departed leader.

President Nkurunziza died at a hospital in Karuzi, eastern Burundi, after suffering a heart attack on Monday morning.

His wife was airlifted to Nairobi on Thursday morning using a portable isolation chamber, an innovative medical unit and transportation system designed for optimal safety during patient loading and transport.
