On June 10, 2020, Kenya's Health Ministry took a significant step in its response to the Covid-19 pandemic by launching a home care programme for patients with mild symptoms.
The move, aimed at easing the burden on hospitals, was announced by Health Chief Administrative Secretary Rashid Aman.
According to Dr. Aman, 78% of infected persons in hospitals are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms, making them suitable for home care.
With the number of positive cases reaching 3094, the Health Ministry recognized the need to adapt its strategy to manage the rising numbers of new infections.
Dr. Aman stated, "WHO recognises that not all people can be cared for when the numbers continue to rise. Due to our rising numbers it is becoming difficult to isolate everybody."
As of the launch date, 781 patients were admitted in various health facilities across the country, with seven in critical condition.
