June 10, 2020, marked a somber day for the entertainment industry in Kenya as news of the passing of renowned actor Pete Openda spread.
Confirming the news, sources revealed that Openda had celebrated his birthday just days prior to his untimely demise.
On his birthday, Openda had expressed gratitude to his loved ones, saying, “Many thanks for all the birthday wishes, I am truly honoured to have you all as friends and family. God Bless,” in a heartfelt post.
Throughout his illustrious career, Openda had made a name for himself in TV shows such as Changing Times, New Beginnings (South Africa and Nigeria), and Arnold & Bundi, among others.
With a strong educational background from Oxford University and Durham University Business School, where he earned a bachelor's and master's degree in business administration, Openda had also ventured into radio presenting, hosting a jazz hour show at Kenya Broadcasting Services (KBC).
Philippe Bresson, director of Insignia, who had collaborated with Openda on several projects, remembered him as a dedicated and talented actor who consistently delivered exceptional performances.
“I am heartbroken. I remember we met him at a restaurant and we were like, ‘we have been watching your expressions, we think you can act’. He was right in the middle of lunch with a client and had never thought of acting,” Bresson recalled.
As news of Openda's passing spread, his friends and family were left in shock, with many taking to social media to express their condolences and pay tribute to the late actor.
