Published on June 10, 2020, the Kenya Prisons Service has been working tirelessly to ensure the safety of inmates and prison officers across the country.
Commissioner General of Kenya Prisons, Wycliffe Ogalo, has assured that all inmates and prison officers are safe from COVID-19.
Ogalo visited Eldoret GK Prison and Kapenguria Prison to assess measures being employed by various prisons to protect inmates from the highly fatal virus.
He noted that the Prisons Service is following and implementing all the protocols put in place by the Ministry of Health to protect inmates.
While acknowledging that the prisons and inmates are part of the wider Kenyan society, Ogalo said the reported cases of COVID-19 were newly convicted cases and are currently kept in isolation centers.
He added that the Prisons Service has put in place modalities to ensure that inmates can communicate with their relatives to assure them of their safety.
Meanwhile, Education Chief Administrative Secretary Mumina Bonaya has urged parents to take more responsibility regarding the safety and basic provisions for their children during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bonaya noted that the support for school-going girls in terms of sanitary towels had been cut off due to school closures, and called on parents to be vigilant and assist their children in learning during this time.
