On June 9, 2020, Makueni County reported its first Covid-19 case, a 35-year-old man who tested positive for the virus while working at the Konza Technocity in Malili.
According to Dr. Patrick Musyoki, the County Health Chief Officer, the patient was admitted to the county Covid treatment centre at the Makueni County Referral Hospital and was still asymptomatic.
However, the patient was put under management, and Dr. Musyoki assured the public that the patient was 'doing very well' and 'still not showing any symptoms.'
As part of the county's emergency response, Dr. Musyoki appealed for calm and urged residents to continue observing the directives given by the Ministry of Health to curb the spread of the disease.
He emphasized the importance of washing hands, observing social distance, and wearing masks correctly.
On the same day, the county emergency response committee received a donation of hand washing equipment from Rotary Club-Machakos branch.
Dr. Musyoki stated that the county surveillance team had traced 18 people who came into contact with the patient and had put them under quarantine at the Makindu Kenya Medical Training Centre.
Further tracing of contacts was ongoing to ensure that all those who interacted with the patient were isolated to prevent the spread of the disease.
