On June 10, 2020, Emirates, a state-owned airline based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, laid off an additional 600 pilots, following the firing of 180 pilots on May 31, 2020.

The airline has also laid off 700 cabin crew members, as part of its restructuring efforts amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Moneycontrol, the sacked pilots were first officers who were under training for type-rating on the A380 and were on probation. However, they will continue to receive their company benefits until June 23, 2020.

Emirates Group recorded a 28% decline in full-year profit in 2020, with net income for the year ending March 31, 2020, hitting approximately $463 million, down from $626 million in the previous year.

As the world's fourth-largest airline by scheduled revenue passenger-kilometers flown, Emirates operates a fleet of over 250 wide-bodied aircraft and flies to over 150 destinations across six continents.

Emirates' President, Tim Clark, has warned that the airline will emerge 20-30% smaller after the COVID-19 pandemic, with plans to retire a large proportion of its fleet, including close to 40 of its 115 A380 aircraft.
