Heavy rains have caused widespread destruction in Kericho town, with a four-storey building in Tebs View Court collapsing on Tuesday at 7:30pm.
A six-year-old boy, who had evacuated the building with his family, tragically dashed back in to collect something he had left behind and became trapped in the rubble.
After a long and difficult search, the boy's body was finally retrieved at midnight, thanks to the efforts of emergency responders and rescue teams.
Area Sub County Police Commandant, Patrick Olweny, confirmed that all six families living in the building have been accounted for, but he emphasized the importance of verifying the identities of everyone who was inside, including visitors.
Olweny said that different teams, including engineers from the Kericho County Government Public Works Department, the Fire Department, Police, and the Kenya Red Cross Society, were working together to dig through the rubble and ensure there were no other human bodies.
"We just want to go through the rubble to ensure there is no other human body and also to ascertain what caused the sinking," Olweny said.
