On June 10, 2020, a 35-year-old woman, Linet Kemunto, was sentenced to one-year home arrest for procuring an abortion using a concoction of paracetamol and tea leaves.
The incident occurred on Saturday at Bonyengwe II sub-location in Nyamira North, where Kemunto threw the baby into River Eyaka after procuring the abortion.
According to a police report, Kemunto pleaded guilty and asked to be pardoned by the court, citing that she is the only person her children and grandchild depend on.
During her court appearance, Kemunto stated that she was driven to the despicable action out of misery, which she attributed to an abusive marriage.
She further revealed that she had managed to move out with her five children, but was still taking care of her teenage daughter's four-month-old child, as well as her child with special needs.
As part of her sentence, Kemunto will undergo a psychiatric examination and serve her one-year home arrest.
