On June 10, 2020, a family of nine in Kasuku Trading Centre, Nyandarua County, received a lifeline when police officers from the Kasuku Police Station stepped in to pay their rent for three months.
Elizabeth Kamene and her eight children were struggling to make ends meet, with the family relying on casual work and well-wishers to survive. The two-roomed rented timber house they shared was in a poor state, with huge gaps on the walls.
Officer Commanding Kasuku Police Station, Cleopas Juma, attributed the move to the directive for police officers to seek accommodation outside Police Lines, which enabled them to witness the needy family. He added that the officers are parents just like their neighbours and could not watch the children suffer.
The officers also provided the family with beds, blankets, household items, food stuffs, school uniforms, sanitary towels, cooking utensils, and firewood. The community also came together to support the family, with Grace Nyambura, a neighbour, praising the officers for their kindness and cooperation.
‘I have never witnessed this kindness before. The officers are respectful and visit us in our homes. We no longer have drunkards and drug addicts in this area because the officers have embraced the community,’ said Nyambura.
