On June 10, 2020, Kenya Copyright Board (KECOBO) enforcement officers, in partnership with DCI detectives, made a significant breakthrough in their fight against copyright infringement. They arrested a 30-year-old IT graduate, John Muyai, for allegedly distributing newspapers in PDF format without permission.

According to reports, John Muyai was presented before Milimani Magistrate's Courts on Wednesday and remanded in police custody until June 15, when he will take plea. He faces charges related to infringement of copyright by way of illegal distribution and offering for sale copyright works without the owners' authority.

Additionally, Muyai is facing an additional charge of circumventing technological protection measures. The Kenya Copyright Board is following crucial leads to arrest other suspects engaged in similar activities, including cases of book publishers' copyright and illegally distributing them in PDF format.

KECOBO Executive Director Edward Sigei stated, 'We are following crucial leads to arrest other suspects engaged in similar activities. Similar investigations are ongoing on cases of book publishers' copyright and illegally distributing them in PDF format.'
