US Olympic Committee Shifts Stance on Athlete Protests

June 9, 2020 - The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) has signaled a change in its stance on athlete protests, after hearing from US athletes last week.

USOC chief executive Sarah Hirshland released an open letter to Team USA athletes, acknowledging that the organization had failed to listen to athletes and tolerated racism and inequality.

The statement comes after weeks of protests across the United States against racism and police brutality, following the death of unarmed black man George Floyd at the hands of police in Minneapolis on May 25.

USOC had faced scrutiny for its sanctions handed out to hammer thrower Gwen Berry and fencer Race Imboden, who both protested on the podium during last year's Pan-American Games in Lima.
