Published on June 10, 2020, the impeachment of Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru by the County Assembly has sparked a heated debate, with many questioning the legality of the move.
The County Assembly Members (MCAs) unanimously voted to impeach Waiguru, a close aide to President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga, in a dramatic sitting that lasted for four hours.
However, the MCAs have been accused of ignoring a court order that earlier stopped the impeachment proceedings. County Assembly Speaker Antony Waweru defended the assembly's actions, stating that courts could not bar the assembly from carrying out its work.
But Senate Minority Whip Mutula Kilonzo Junior has warned that the defiance of the court order could haunt the MCAs, who actively participated in the ouster motion in the Senate dominated by Senators allied to the president and his handshake partner.
