On June 10, 2020, Ghana's Ministry of Communication issued a directive to the National Communication Authority (NCA) to implement regulations aimed at curbing MTN's dominance in the country's telecommunications market.
The move is part of efforts to promote competition and create a level playing field for all telecom operators in Ghana.
According to the Minister for Communications, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the regulations will address disparities in market share and revenue among telecom operators, preventing monopolistic behavior.
“While the telecommunications policy aims to encourage the growth of the telecommunications sector, it also seeks to create a level playing field and ensure a regulatory regime that ultimately benefits the consumer,” she said.
MTN has a significant market share in Ghana, with 70% of mobile data subscriptions in Q1 2020 and 75% of the country's telecommunication market share in Q4 2019.
However, the company has not received formal notification from the regulator and is awaiting further details on the regulations.
