On June 11, 2020, Kenya's virtual athletics race, 'The Maurie Plant Memorial,' will take place at the Nyayo National Stadium, despite the ongoing night curfew. The event, which will be live on a split-screen at 9:40pm, has been given permission by the authorities to proceed.
Organisers have assured of tight security measures, with police providing escort services for the participants. The event is a closed affair, with only a limited number of people expected to be present at the stadium.
The Kenyan team, named 'Team Cheruiyot,' will be led by reigning world 1,500m champion Timothy Cheruiyot. The team will consist of Commonwealth Games 1,500m champion Elijah Manangoi, Africa Under-18 1,500m champion Vincent Keter, Edwin Melli, and Timothy Sein.
The Norwegian team, 'Team Ingebrigtsen,' will consist of Ingebrigtsen brothers- Jakob, Filip, and Henrik. The race will be commentated by Steve Cram, who will be keeping an eye on the Ingebrigtsen brothers' chances of breaking the European record of 4:51.39 set by Steve Cram in 1985.
The race will be a 2,000m event, with each team starting with five runners and finishing with three. The team with the best overall time for their three runners will be declared the winner.
