Published on June 10, 2020, a long-standing boundary dispute between Makueni and Taita Taveta counties has escalated.

Taita Taveta County administration pulled down a sign post erected by Makueni County, claiming that the boundary lies at Mtito Andei River, not the Tsavo River as Makueni County insists.

On June 3, 2020, Lands Executive Mwandawiro Mghanga led the county's law enforcement officers and pulled down the sign post at Tsavo River, citing that Makueni County had been collecting revenue at Mtito Andei town illegally.

However, Makueni County MCAs retaliated by re-erecting the sign post at Tsavo River, with an MCA stating, 'Destruction of the sign post by Taita Taveta County leaders is provocation.'

Mr. Mghanga claimed that Mtito Andei residents were resisting paying taxes to Makueni County, claiming it does not provide them with services, and that hotels in Tsavo West used to pay taxes to the county government.
