On June 8, 2020, Burundi's President Pierre Nkurunziza, aged 55, passed away due to cardiac arrest, as reported by the government.
According to reports, Nkurunziza was admitted to the hospital on Saturday after feeling unwell, but his condition initially improved.
However, on Monday, he suffered a cardiac arrest, and despite efforts to revive him, he was declared dead.
As per the Burundi constitution, the president was permitted to vie for another term but had resolved to retire as a sign of patriotism, and was due to step down in August.
