On June 9, 2020, Burundi's President Pierre Nkurunziza, aged 55, passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest, the government announced.
According to a government statement, Nkurunziza was admitted to hospital on Saturday after feeling unwell, but his condition improved initially.
However, on Monday, he suffered a cardiac arrest, and despite efforts to revive him, he was unsuccessful.
Mr. Nkurunziza was due to step down from the presidency in August after 15 years in power.
