On June 9, 2020, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested Kiplagat Cherop, the former acting Director General of the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA), on corruption charges.

Cherop was arrested alongside seven other suspects for violating the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Act in the award of a tender for the construction of a multi-storey building in Mbaraki, Mombasa.

The arrest comes after the Director of Public Prosecutions gave consent for the arrest and prosecution of 12 suspects with various offenses.

The other arrested individuals include KMA head of Procurement Edwin Mongare Momanyi, Denis Ng'eno, the project manager, Jared Biwott, a Director at Mengi design ltd, Robinson Karigu, a quantity surveyor, as well as Seth Oluoch, Juma Ahmed Ali, and Jemimah Msinga, who are members of the tender evaluation committee.

According to the EACC, the suspects were involved in altering tender sums, exposing KMA to a risk of losing Ksh 205,379,421 Million.

The Commission has further directed KMA branch Manager Kisumu Joel Kiprono Bii, Project Coordinator Peter Kimani Kinyajui, as well as tender evaluation committee members Bakari Omar and Francis Okello to present themselves at the nearest EACC office with immediate effect.
