As of June 9, 2020, Kenya's COVID-19 cases have surged to 2989, with 127 new cases reported in the last 24 hours.
According to Dr. Francis Kuria, Director of Public Health, the existing bed capacity in hospitals needs to be expanded to deal with the surge in positive cases.
Dr. Kuria noted that a number of isolation centres have not met set standards, but as of Tuesday, there were 101 isolation centres around the country.
Health Chief Administrative Secretary, Dr. Rashid Aman, revealed that the government is exploring different ways to curb the virus, particularly in areas like Kibra where numbers continue to increase.
Dr. Aman stated that in case of a resurgence of infections in Eastleigh, the government will not hesitate to implement new measures to contain the virus.
He also advised the elderly to remain at home, citing them as the most vulnerable group, and emphasized the importance of wearing masks when attending to matters outside the home.
Dr. Aman acknowledged that the government is yet to gather sufficient evidence on asymptomatic patients, and new measures and policies will be shaped as more information becomes available.
