PSG defender Thiago Silva, 35, is set to leave the Paris club this summer after his contract expires on June 30, according to reports from L'Equipe and RMC on Monday evening.
Thiago Silva, who arrived in Paris in 2012, was informed in person by the club's sporting director Leonardo of the decision not to keep him within the club, according to the two French media outlets.
The decision comes as PSG faces significant financial losses, estimated at over 200 million euros, due to the shutdown of Ligue 1 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The club is also looking to reduce its payroll, which exceeds 300 million euros, and Thiago Silva's XXL salary makes him a prime target for cost-cutting measures.
Thiago Silva, who has won seven French champion titles, four French Cups, five League Cups, and seven Champions Trophies with PSG, could return to Brazil and his former club Fluminense, which he wore the jersey of in a recent photo posted on social networks.
His wife, Isabele, had expressed a desire for the family to stay in Paris, saying in mid-May, "For us, it would be great to continue at PSG, we like the club (...) This is where the children grew up, it is in Paris that we would like to pursue our careers."
