On June 9, 2020, a heated debate at the Kirinyaga County Assembly turned violent as ward representatives clashed over a motion to impeach Governor Anne Waiguru.
The altercation began when Mutira MCA Kinyua Wangui moved the motion to impeach Ms Waiguru, prompting two MCAs allied to the governor, Antony Munene and Lucy Njeri, to rise up and claim that their signatures had been forged.
As the debate escalated, the two MCAs confronted Mr Wangui, vowing to stop the motion. The scene quickly turned chaotic, with the two groups engaging in a fierce fight, punching, kicking, and throwing chairs at each other.
It took the intervention of the assembly's orderlies to separate the groups and kick Mr Munene and Ms Njeri out of the House for their role in disrupting the motion.
Majority Leader Kamau Murango later condemned the incident, calling for the Speaker to discipline the unruly MCAs.
"This is a House of order and regulations and those out to cause chaos should not be spared," said Mr Murango.
Governor Waiguru responded to the impeachment motion by releasing a statement, rubbishing the motion and stating that there is a court order in place barring her ouster.
She vowed to sue the Speaker and those participating in the motion for contempt of court orders.
