On June 8, 2020, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan spoke with US President Donald Trump in a phone call, discussing the ongoing conflict in Libya.

Turkey supports the internationally recognized government of Fayez al Serraj, which has made significant gains in recent weeks against the forces of Khalifa Haftar, backed by the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Russia.

According to Erdogan, the two leaders agreed on 'some issues' related to the conflict, but no specifics were provided.

A White House statement confirmed the call, stating that Trump and Erdogan discussed the war in Libya, as well as Syria and the wider eastern Mediterranean region.

Despite calls for a ceasefire from Egypt, Turkey has vowed to continue fighting to seize the strategic city of Sirte and the Jufra air base.

Erdogan also expressed his intention to discuss Russia's role in Libya with President Vladimir Putin, including the supply of Russian planes and air defenses to Haftar's forces.
