On Tuesday, a dramatic turn of events unfolded in Kirinyaga County as 23 out of 33 Members of County Assembly (MCAs) voted to impeach Governor Anne Waiguru over allegations of gross-misconduct and abuse of office.

According to reports, four members of the county assembly abstained while four others were absent from the proceedings.

The motion to impeach Governor Waiguru was filed by Mutira Ward MCA David Kinyua Wangui on March 31.

Earlier, chaos erupted in the assembly after two MCAs, Anthony Munene (Karumandi ward) and Nominated MCA Lucy Njeri, who are allied to Governor Waiguru, were forcefully ejected from the proceedings.

As the impeachment motion gained momentum, 23 out of the 33 MCAs slept at the county headquarters through Monday night in readiness for Tuesday's proceedings.

Despite the impeachment, Governor Waiguru has scoffed at the move, describing it as an 'ill-informed' and 'ill-timed' impeachment motion.

She stated in a press statement before her impeachment that the issues raised in the motion are baseless and a waste of valuable time that would be better spent handling the serious issues impacting the county, including the corona crisis.

Waiguru also claimed that she had obtained a High Court order blocking the impeachment proceedings, which the MCAs ignored.
