On June 9, 2020, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru faced a tumultuous session at the Kirinyaga County Assembly, which ultimately led to her impeachment.

The assembly's decision was made after a heated debate, with MCAs rejecting a 90M budget meant to furnish the Governor's Office.

According to sources, MCAs supporting Governor Waiguru accused Interior PS Karanja Kibicho of sponsoring the rebellion against her, claiming he had bankrolled some members to push motions of no-confidence against Waiguru's Finance Minister Moses Migwi and Chief Officer Joseph Makumi.

The MCAs alleged that the two officials were incompetent and corrupt, and their removal was intended to prevent budget allocations and cripple the county government.

Majority Leader Kamau Murango led the opposition against Waiguru's Supplementary Budget, which had no cash for development.
