June 9, 2020 - Kisumu County's healthcare services have come to a grinding halt as health workers, including nurses, clinical officers, and pharmacists, have gone on strike over delayed salary payments and COVID-19 allowances.

The workers have accused Governor Anyang' Nyong'o, the County Executive Committee Member for Health, of mismanaging the health docket.

Among their demands are redeployment, promotions, payment of salaries to workers who have already been promoted, and the release of COVID-19 allowances.

The strike comes a day after Governor Nyong'o appealed to the health workers to call off the strike following failed negotiations.

Despite a meeting between the County Assembly and officials from five unions and the County Executive, no consensus was reached to iron out outstanding issues.

As of now, Kisumu County has reported 12 coronavirus cases out of the 2,862 confirmed cases in the country.
