On June 8, 2020, Athletics Kenya (AK) Central region chairman David Miano sounded the alarm on the rising cases of doping in the country, which could have serious consequences, including bans from international events.
Speaking at Ruring'u stadium in Nyeri County, Miano emphasized the need for concerted efforts from the government and athletes to curb the menace.
"Given what has been happening in the country and having the bulk of athletes on this side in Central region, the same menace may eventually spread to us," Miano said.
AK has been keeping a close watch on training sessions in the region to prevent the abuse of performance-enhancing substances.
However, Miano noted that the situation in the Central region is not as bad as in other areas, citing an instance in Kirinyaga County that is being investigated by the authorities.
AK has vowed to take tough action against anyone found using doping substances and the suppliers.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the AK annual calendar, the organization had planned to hold competitions to identify new talents from the grassroots level to the national level.
During the lockdown, chairmen of the five counties have been directed to ensure that coaches monitor individual training for possible assistance.
The Chairman thanked the National and County Governments for the ongoing construction of the modern Ruring'u stadium, which is an asset to local and foreign athletes.
