On June 9, 2020, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) announced plans to petition the National Assembly and Senate to initiate a motion to impeach President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The move is in solidarity with Chief Justice David Maraga, who had earlier accused the president of derailing the process of swearing in 41 judges.

According to the CJ, President Kenyatta is to blame for the backlog at the judiciary, having refused to appoint the 41 judges, a 'grave violation of the constitution.'

Maraga also lamented that the president's refusal to hold meetings with him has left him with no choice but to raise the matter through a public statement.

He noted that the president's disregard for court orders is a 'recipe for anarchy' and potentially undermines the country's constitutional democracy.

LSK President Nelson Havi also called for the removal of Attorney General and Solicitor General from the list of advocates, citing their role in advising the president on matters that undermine the judiciary.

They will be given 7 days to respond to the charges after which they will defend themselves before the council.
