As of June 9, 2020, the world is grappling with a severe coronavirus pandemic, with over seven million confirmed cases and 404,000 virus-related deaths.
Despite progress in tackling the virus in Europe, the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the pandemic is worsening globally.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized the need for countries to maintain their efforts in combating the virus, stating, "More than six months into this pandemic, this is not the time for any country to take its foot off the pedal."
According to the WHO, over 100,000 cases have been reported in nine of the past 10 days, with 75% of Sunday's cases coming from just 10 countries, primarily in the Americas and South Asia.
While the WHO has noted positive signs in several countries, Tedros cautioned against complacency, saying, "In these countries, the biggest threat now is complacency."
He also highlighted the need for continued vigilance, citing studies that show most people globally are still susceptible to infection.
