On June 9, 2020, Parliament allocated Sh1.2 billion for public hearings in the 2020/21 period, a move that signals the country's readiness for constitutional reforms.
The allocation was made in the report on Treasury's proposed Budget, which was reviewed by the Budget and Appropriations Committee (BAC) chaired by Kikuyu Member of Parliament Kimani Ichung'wa.
The committee recommended that the funds be ring-fenced, meaning they will be protected against any budgetary cuts by lawmakers or the National Treasury.
The allocation comes days after lawmakers tabled the Referendum Bill 2020, which aims to review the 2010 Constitution to address current challenges.
President Uhuru Kenyatta had earlier hinted at reviewing the Constitution to end the cycle of post-election violence, a move that is expected to lead to a referendum on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) this year.
Other notable allocations in the budget review include Sh28.4 billion for the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS), Sh5 billion for the Konza Technopolis, and Sh2.6 billion to expand community-based irrigation schemes.
