On June 5, 2020, a domestic fight between Damaris Nthoki and her husband Shadrack Mutunga Makau turned violent, leaving Makau seriously injured.

The incident occurred at their rented house in Nairobi, where the couple was living with their young child.

According to reports, the couple had a disagreement over Sh200 that Nthoki allegedly took from Makau's pockets.

Corporal John Chacha of Huruma Police Station sought to detain Nthoki for seven days, but Senior Resident Magistrate Lewis Gatheru of the Makadara Law Courts granted her a cash bail of Sh30,000.

Gatheru also directed Nthoki to provide two contact persons who would guarantee her compliance with the investigating officer, failure to which she would remain at the station until Monday next week.
