On the cusp of a new era for athletics in Kericho, the county government's Sh37 million investment in an artificial athletics track at Kericho Green Stadium is nearing completion.
According to Governor Paul Chepkwony, the track, which features eight lanes and one for officials, is set to be handed over to the county later this month.
"The county government has used Sh37 million to lay the artificial running track which has eight lanes and one for use by those officiating various competitions," Governor Chepkwony said.
With a lifespan of 15 years, the high-quality track is expected to host regional and international track competitions, solidifying Kericho's position as a hub for athletics.
Once complete, the stadium will accommodate over 40,000 spectators, a significant increase from the current 5,000 capacity.
"It is not by default that we hosted the 2019 Kenya Inter-Counties Sports and Cultural Association (Kicosca) Games. Once laying of the artificial track is complete, we will be ready to hold regional and international track competitions," Governor Chepkwony said.
Deputy President William Ruto presided over the opening ceremony of Kicosca Games in Kericho, while Council of Governors Chairman Wycliff Oparanya closed the event.
The stadium's renovation has been ongoing for three months, with the contractor facing delays due to heavy rains.
"Initially, we expected the contractor to complete renovation and to hand over the project within 45 days but heavy rains interfered with that," said Anthony Koskei, Kericho County Chief Officer in charge of Sports.
Other than athletes preparing for international races, various football clubs use the stadium, including Kenyan Premier League club Kericho Zoo FC and lower-tier league clubs Sosiot FC, Kaborok FC, Matrix FC, and Silibwet FC.
"The maroon track and the white marks which we chose are quiet popular with indoor games," said Ms Edna Ruto, the County Executive in charge of Sports.
The main dais will be upgraded to make it secure, and to facilitate ease of movement between VIPs attending matches, players and spectators.
With a rich history dating back to the 1980s, Kericho Green Stadium has been a hub for athletics talent, with athletes like Japheth Kipkurgat, Mercy Cherono, Lydia Chepkirui, and Ferguson Rotich honing their skills at the stadium.
