On June 8, 2020, the European Union announced an additional Sh7.8 billion grant to support Kenya's response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The funding, which adds to an earlier Sh8.4 billion, will help Kenyans at risk of hunger and strengthen state measures against the spread of the pandemic.
EU Ambassador to Kenya Simon Mordue noted that the funding demonstrates the EU's support for Kenya during this challenging period.
‘The European Union stands with Kenya during this challenging period and we recognise the severe impact this crisis is having on people’s lives,' Ambassador Mordue said.
The Sh7.8 billion grant will be allocated as follows: Sh3.6 billion for containing the spread and impact of Covid-19 in the health, social, and economic sectors; Sh1.2 billion for vulnerable families and individuals in informal settlements through monthly cash transfers; and between Sh2.4 billion to Sh3 billion for supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) through providing access to finance.
Additionally, Sh600 million will be allocated directly to the Safe Trade Emergency Facility to ensure food security and access to critically required medicines.
