June 8, 2020 - Kenya's COVID-19 cases continue to rise, with 95 new cases reported on Monday, according to the Ministry of Health. The new cases bring the national tally to 2,862.
Health Chief Administrative Secretary Dr. Rashid Aman attributed the increase in cases to the high number of tests conducted, with 1,095 samples tested across the country. The cumulative number of tests conducted in the country stands at 98,439.
The new cases were recorded in various counties, with Mombasa leading the pack with 56 new cases, followed by Nairobi with 13, Busia with 10, Kajiado with 6, and Kilifi with 3. Kitui, Kwale, and Marsabit each recorded one case.
Dr. Aman expressed hope that the numbers would rise, but emphasized that the country's hospitals were doing an exceptional job in attending to the positive cases. He also noted that the number of recoveries was increasing, with 97 more patients discharged from hospital on Monday.
Unfortunately, the number of fatalities from the virus rose to 85 after a patient succumbed in Nairobi. However, Dr. Aman remained optimistic, saying, “This is a clear indication that contracting the disease is not a death sentence.”
He urged people above 60 years and caregivers to wear N95 masks, as well as those with underlying conditions, due to the high risk of contracting the virus, in line with new guidelines from the World Health Organisation.
