June 8, 2020 - Nyeri, Kenya - The fight against doping in athletics has gained momentum in Kenya's central region, with Athletics Kenya officials speaking out against the vice.

Athletics Kenya Central region chairman David Miano expressed concern over the increasing cases of doping, stating that the association has put its officials on high alert to report any suspicious activity.

"As an association, we are concerned by reported cases in camps. We have facilities in Nyahururu where athletes train, so we have put our antenna high up to report anyone trying to mess us as a country," Miano said.

One case of doping has been reported in Kirinyaga county, and the police are handling the matter to ensure justice is served, Miano revealed.

Athletics Kenya chairman in Nyandarua County, Samuel Ndungu, urged the government to take punitive action against those found engaging in doping, saying it is giving the county a bad name.

"We urge the government to institute harsh penalties, including jailing those behind the vice that is giving our county a bad name. We should not allow a few people to destroy our good name in this discipline," Ndungu stated.

However, Miano expressed concerns over the preparedness of athletes ahead of the upcoming international meet, citing the closure of camps due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Many of our athletes have not been training due to the fact that they train in groups, and with the closure of camps, their standards will be lower. It's high time we open up," Miano opined.

The association plans to conduct its annual athletics meet in August, provided the country has conquered the pandemic.

David Miano also lauded the resumption of construction works at Ruringu Stadium, which had stalled for three years due to non-payment of contractors.

The stadium, which will cost the exchequer Sh450 million, was launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
