June 8, 2020, marked a significant day in the Jubilee Party's internal politics, as President Uhuru Kenyatta addressed his Deputy William Ruto in a stern tone during a Parliamentary Group Meeting.

According to sources, Uhuru likened the succession politics to a relay race, emphasizing the importance of completing the journey together. However, Ruto's early campaigning and decision to leave his spot to pick the baton irked the President.

Uhuru stated that a person who starts early campaigns will be exhausted by the time the real race begins, making it impossible for them to win. This statement was seen as a clear indication that Ruto will not succeed him.

The meeting also ratified the ouster of Ben Washiali and Cecily Mbarire as Majority Whip and Deputy respectively. Majority leader Aden Duale survived the purge but faces the possibility of being removed in another upcoming Parliamentary Group Meeting.

Tanga Tanga MPs who attended the meeting felt lectured by the President, with one MP from Rift Valley questioning why members were not allowed to air their differences. Only three people spoke during the meeting: Secretary General Raphael Tuju, Ruto, and the President.
