Published on June 8, 2020
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, have been meeting with individuals and organizations linked to the Black Lives Matter movement to educate themselves on racial injustices.
According to Bazaar magazine, the couple has been having private conversations with community leaders and people at every level to better understand the issues surrounding police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement.
George Floyd, a black American, died on May 25 after being arrested by a white police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The tragic event triggered protests worldwide, calling for an end to systemic racism and police violence.
Meghan Markle spoke out in a powerful video, saying, "George Floyd’s life mattered and Breonna Taylor’s life mattered and Philando Castile’s life mattered and Tamir Rice’s life mattered… and so did so many other people whose names we know and whose names we do not know."
She also recalled the 1992 LA riots, when black man Rodney King was beaten by the police, saying, "I was 11 or 12 years old and it was the LA Riots, which was also triggered by a senseless act of racism."
"I remember the curfew and I remember rushing back home and on that drive home, seeing ash fall from the sky and smelling the smoke and seeing the smoke billow out of buildings," she said.
