Garissa county contractors are up in arms over Sh1.9 billion in pending bills owed to them by the county government, with some 20 contractors from across the county seeking the intervention of Senator Yussuf Haji.
According to the contractors, led by Abdirahman Ahmed, they have been trying to reach out to Senator Haji for mediation, but to no avail. The contractors claim that despite numerous efforts, Senator Haji has remained silent on the matter.
Ali Korane, the Garissa county governor, has previously stated that his administration is not in a hurry to pay pending bills inherited from the previous administration. Mohamed Roble, the county executive for finance, has been accused of favouring certain companies in payments.
The contractors are now urging the National Treasury to withhold funds allocated to the county until they are paid. They claim that many of them are struggling to fend for their families, while others risk having their property auctioned for defaulting on loan repayment.
