President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced the lifting of the lockdown in Eastleigh, Mombasa's Old Town, Kilifi, and Kwale, effective from 4 am on Sunday, June 7, 2020.
The decision comes after infection rates slowed down in the affected counties, according to the President.
"That in view of the successful containment of the disease in the Counties of Kilifi and Kwale, the cessation of movement in and out of the two Counties that is currently in force, shall lapse," President Kenyatta said in an address to the nation from State House on Saturday.
However, Nairobi Metropolitan will remain under lockdown with restricted movement in and out of Nairobi County, which continues to record high infection rates.
President Kenyatta also extended the nationwide night curfew for 30 more days, starting from 9 pm to 4 am to enable businesses to thrive for more hours.
On the education sector, President Kenyatta announced that schools in Kenya will re-open at the beginning of September after closing for five months due to COVID-19.
He directed the Education Ministry to consult with Health experts to come up with a new calendar by mid-August, with the aim of resuming progressive normalcy in the education sector by September 1.
