June 8, 2020 - Nairobi, Kenya
President Uhuru Kenyatta has extended the ban on all forms of gatherings, including political meetings, social gatherings, and bars, for 30 more days.
The decision was announced in a Saturday address from State House, Nairobi, where the President cited the country's failure to meet the required thresholds for relaxation of the ban.
Kenya has been experiencing a spike in coronavirus infections, with 2,600 cases reported in the past three months.
The ban, which was initially implemented in March, has contributed significantly to the containment of the virus, with experts attributing the low infection rates to the restrictions.
However, the President has lifted the cessation of movement into and out of Eastleigh, Mombasa's Old Town, Kilifi, and Kwale counties, citing a decline in infection rates in these areas.
The nationwide night curfew has also been extended for 30 more days, with the new order taking effect on June 7.
Learners will have to wait until September for the resumption of studies, with the Education Ministry directed to come up with a new school calendar by mid-August.
