At Makerere, he earned a first-class honours degree in political science and served as Guild President in 1969/70. This leadership role marked the beginning of his journey in public service.

Anyang’ Nyong’o’s political career began in the early 1990s during Kenya’s fight for multi-party democracy. He was elected to Parliament in 1992, becoming a key player in the push for reforms.
Between 1998 and 2002, he served as a nominated Member of Parliament. In 2003, under President Mwai Kibaki, Nyong’o was appointed Minister for Planning and National Development. From 2008 to 2013, he served as Minister for Medical Services, where he pushed for healthcare reforms.
