Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o is a respected Kenyan scholar, politician, and author. Born in 1943 in Kisumu, he rose from academia to national leadership, shaping policies and championing democracy for decades.

At Makerere, he earned a first-class honours degree in political science and served as Guild President in 1969/70. This leadership role marked the beginning of his journey in public service.

Anyang’ Nyong’o’s political career began in the early 1990s during Kenya’s fight for multi-party democracy. He was elected to Parliament in 1992, becoming a key player in the push for reforms.
Between 1998 and 2002, he served as a nominated Member of Parliament. In 2003, under President Mwai Kibaki, Nyong’o was appointed Minister for Planning and National Development. From 2008 to 2013, he served as Minister for Medical Services, where he pushed for healthcare reforms.
In the 2007 elections, he won the Kisumu Rural Constituency seat and joined Parliament again. In 2013, he transitioned to the Senate, representing Kisumu County. After a successful term, he was elected as Kisumu Governor in 2017 and re-elected in 2022.
Nyong’o also served as the Secretary-General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), one of Kenya’s largest political parties. He is currently the party’s acting leader.

They have five children. Their most famous child is Lupita Nyong’o, the Oscar-winning actress known for her role in 12 Years a Slave. Lupita often speaks about her Kenyan roots and her father’s influence.
Their other children are Fiona, Esperanza, Zawadi, and Peter Nyong’o Jr., a professional football goalkeeper.
