Story · Watch vintage video of American human rights activist Malcom X praising Kenyan freedom fighter Dedan Kimathi and the Mau Mau movement

Sixty three years ago, Kenyan freedom fighter Dedan Kimathi was coldly executed at the Kamiti Maximum Prison in Nairobi after he was sentenced to death for the illegal possession of a firearm by Chief Justice Kenneth O’Connor.

In October 1956, Kimathi was finally caught at Tetu town in Nyeri after years on the run. He was shot by Corporal Wanjohi and Tribal Policeman Ndirangu while trying to climb up a mountain.

Kimathi's capture such a huge victory for the British colonialists that they made sure the announcement was made in every part of the country. Many white supremacists tried to vilify Mr Kimathi and Mau Mau's activities in the country but according to a video that emerged online during his anniversary, Malcom X thought otherwise.

The vintage video shows the American human rights activist defending Dedan and his movement at a time when the entire when they needed it the most.

When asked if he favoured Mau Mau's “terror” activities in the country, Malcom responded by saying he believed the conditions that prevailed in Kenya at that time, forced the Mau Mau to take defensive action and that all of their attacks were simply in retaliation.
