Watch: Rogue Mombasa Traffic Police Uses Matatu Conductor As Table
Newsroom Updated 1 min read
Hi Cyprian,
My matatu van plying the Voi - Mombasa route was today arrested because, well! the police had to find a fault in it.
The van was clean and had adhered to all traffic rules but Kenyan police who must find a fault in a Matatu so as to extort, arrested the van because the conductor wasn't carrying the Sacco badge.
The traffic police woman then went on to dehumanise the conductor by using him as a table for writing her order to attend court.
This is shameful.
You find no fault in a car, then arrest the conductor and use him as a writing table.
Colonial tactics.
The Matatu crew are now expected to appear in court tomorrow for flimsy charges.
The owner is compmaining that even if someone has committed a crime. This is not how they should be treated.
This is wasting people's valuable time as this is a petty offence.
The Kenya National Human Rights Commission (KNHRC) must really push that decriminalization of petty offences.
KNHRC sensitized people today through a hashtag.
Criminalising petty offences is a waste of time and resources.
