The Crisis At Gor Mahia Continues As Players Boycott Training Over Unpaid Dues
Newsroom Updated 2 min read
Gor Mahia's preparations for their CAF Champions League first round clash with Malawian champions Nyasa Bullets have faced a huge hurdle after players refused to train unless their October salaries were released. According to a local daily, was drama at the Kenyan Champions' training ground after players completely refused to perform their usual drills unless they got a confirmation that their dues had been wired into their bank accounts. The club has a wage bill of about Ksh. 5.5 million and has still not paid its staff 15 days after the fifth deadline.
“We are not going anywhere without our salaries,” warned one of the players who sought anonymity.
“The management has been giving us empty promises since we came back from Everton,” said another.
The team was due to travel to Nakuru County on Tuesday for a four-day preseason camp ahead of their first CAF Champions League game on Wednesday next week.
Gor Mahia looks to be facing a major crisis after losing their head coach Dylan Kerr and the possibility of key players like Francis Kahata exiting the club has worsened matters. It is believed the players and staff have little confidence in the current club management and they have expressed great displeasure with how the club handles their salaries.
This is the second time in the span of a few weeks that the players have staged a boycott over their dues. Last year, during a tournament in Tanzania, players threatened not to play a game unless the club released the money it owed them.
